Road Map (Longitude)
. For this puzzle you will just need Marketa’s road map. Each of the four comet sightings has a clue and an “( E)” next to it. You’ll need to find a longitude number for each sighting and then use those to figure out where the next one will be.
. Starting with the first clue on the left, look closely at the compasses and see if you notice anything.
. Each compass has one direction highlighted in red, and also a letter in the center of it. What could the red directions indicate?
. The first one has an arrow pointing NE. What if you followed it?
. Follow the directions from compass to compass, collecting a string of letters.
. If you follow the compasses NE, N, E, NE, E, S, SE, S, E, E (end) you can connect the letters THIRTY FIVE. That’s the longitude for the sighting in 830 A.D.
. The second clue from the left says the days from the journey til then really “add up.” Where can you see how many days have passed?
. Add up the number of days from the Start to the sighting at 235 A.D.
. The 235 A.D. longitude is 55E. The third clue from the left is telling you to look at the mountains. What do you notice?
. The two mountain ranges each have mountains of various sizes from small to large. What can you do with them?
. Connect each set of mountains in order of size to make a 7 and a 5. The comet sighting at 360 B.C. is at 75E.
The remaining clue mentions feet. Notice the two footprints on the far right and center of the page. What can you do with them?
. Fold the center of the page over toward the right, trying to place the two footprints next to each other as if they belong to one person.
. Looking down the fold, there are letters spelling out NINETY FIVE. The 955 B.C. sighting is at 95E. So where will the comet appear next?
. Remember the letter said that the most recent comet sighting was in Prague in 1425, which is located at 15E. Can you use the pattern to predict the next sighting?
. The sightings are moving westward 20 degrees every 595 years. What is 20 degrees west of 15E?
Partial solution check: Enter the longitude for any of the 4 comet sightings in 8E/8W format.
Solution check: Enter longitude in 8E/8W format.
Constellation Chart (Latitude)
. For this puzzle you need the sheet with the star diagram and the rotating constellation chart.
. You are given a latitude next to each Roman numeral, with the top right one being 32N. Try to figure out why this one is labeled Scorpion.
. If you turn the pointer of the top layer of the constellation chart to 32, do you notice anything?
. Turned to 32, the top layer will have pointers on every star in the Scorpion constellation. Now try doing that with the other numbers.
. The constellations, in order from I to IV are the Warrior, Serpent, Phoenix, and Scorpion.
. Take a look at the page with the geometric diagram. The line and 2 circles next to the IV on the top right should give you some guidance toward the next steps.
. The IV diagram shows the Scorpion constellation and how it “breaks apart” into pieces. The empty blue circle for the Scorpion should contain 3 red stars. Can you break apart the other constellations in the same way?
. The Warrior may be tricky because it has more than two kinds of stars. Note that whatever you put into the blue circles should correspond to the contents of one of the blue circles on the diagram.
. The blue circles should be filled as follows: III=5 purple+6 blue; II=6 purple, 4 yellow; I=3 purple+2 each purple, red, and green, 1 blue and 1 yellow. Now that you have those blue circles, what does the folding diagram in the bottom center indicate? The first fold is already shown to you.
. Each pair of blue circles has a red line between them. How might those correspond to the red lines in the folding diagram?
. Use the edge of the paper as indicated by the red line to connect the two blue circles for the Warrior on the geometric diagram. Then continue folding for constellations II-IV, using the red line as a guide for which part of the paper should connect the blue circles. You will be left with one set of stars still visible.
. Remaining visible are three 4-pointed stars and five 5-pointed stars. How can you relate those back to the constellation chart?
. One of the constellations is made up of exactly those stars.
. The constellation is the Longbow. How can you use it to find the next latitude?
. Spin the top layer of the chart until it has indicators landing on each of the stars in the Longbow constellation. That’s your latitude.
Potion Recipe (Brew Time)
The Symbols
. For this puzzle you will need the page with the recipe tree and the ingredient puzzle pages from the first two packages.
. Start by looking at the tree roots - do they remind you of anything?
. Each of the 6 knots in the roots is associated with one ingredient. Perhaps looking back at the pages from packages 1 and 2 will spark your memory.
. Each ingredient puzzle has a decorative element on the page that looks like one of the knots. See the symbol on the crystal leaf for example.
. From left to right they are: Bone, crystal, flower, mushroom, leaf, butterfly.
The Order
. To find the order all you need is the recipe tree page.
. The leaf with the flower says it is step A - try to figure out why.
. Look at the symbols right above the leaves. They are not repeated anywhere else. How can they relate to the steps on the tree trunk?
. The glyphs above the leaves are a cryptogram. You must use the pattern of letters to find the right word. For example, look at the location of repeated or double letters in a word and see which step it can match to.
. The letters for the flower can be decrypted to find the word CALCINATION, making crystal step A. Translate the other cryptograms the same way.
. The order is: A - flower; B - crystal; C - butterfly; D - bone; E - mushroom; F - leaf;
The Weights
The Time (Once the above three are completed)
. For this puzzle you need the recipe page. For the purpose of clear hints we will refer to the shapes as the following, as seen from left to right under the tree roots: U, T, +, triangle, fish, circle.
. You need to use the scales to try and figure out the weight of each ingredient from 1-6. Start by looking at the fish. What is it heavier or lighter than?
. You can determine that the fish is at least lighter than everything except the circle, meaning it must be 1 or 2. Looking at the triangle, what kind of number must it be?
. Since 2 fish = 1 triangle, triangles must be 2 or 4.
. Since the circle and fish must be 1 and 2, triangle must be 4, making the fish 2 and the circle 1.
. Using the third set of scales and you can determine + is 3, since circle (1)+fish (2) = 3
. Using the first two sets of scales you can determine the U is 5 and the T is 6.
. The answer is: 1. Circle 2. Fish 3. Plus sign 4. Triangle 5. U shape 6. T shape.
. Before proceeding, complete the symbols, order, and weights puzzles above. For this puzzle you’ll need those solutions and the recipe page.
. The symbols in the bottom diamond-shaped diagram are each a composite of 2 symbols. How can you find the top half of the symbol for each ingredient?
. On the chart right below the scales, find the top half for each composite symbol by cross referencing the symbols in the green circles on top with their corresponding weights on the left side of the chart. For example, the circle=1 so it should be paired up with the asterisk on row 1 below the circle.
. Now you’ll want to associate each composite symbol with their ingredient, and likewise their place in the order A-F.
. On the bottom diagram, start at the symbol for A, which is the leftmost symbol in the 3rd row of the diamond. You’ll need to create a path to B, then C, etc, by using either horizontal, vertical, or diagonal movement per the examples.
. Start on the third row in the far left. Move 2 East to B, 4 SW to C, 2 SE to D, 2 NE to E, 1 W to F. Use the rule diagrams to determine how many hours each move requires.
. Moving diagonally takes 1 hour per space, and moving horizontally or vertically takes 2 per space. The first and second moves each take 4 hours. Calculate the rest accordingly and add up the total time.
Marketa's Letter
. For this puzzle you just need Marketa’s letter. Focus on the decorated letters at the beginning of each paragraph.
. Each decorated letter represents a word.
. Marketa asks in her letter if you can identify the animals.
. Identify the animals and extract the first letter from each one.
. Use the first letter of each animal along with the decorated letter and unscramble the letters to make a word.
. The animals are: Armadillo, Deer, Eagle, Horse, Iguana, Lion, Narwhal, Owl, Rabbit, Tiger.
. The first word is STONE.
The Ritual & Moon Phase Cipher
. For the final puzzle you will need the solution from Marketa’s letter, the stone, the wooden pieces, the candle, the pointy figurine, the two tiles, and the clear box.
. Have you figured out what the message from Marketa’s letter means yet?
. Marketa’s letter says “stone in clear water, color blinded with blood.” Fill about two thirds of the clear container with water and drop the stone inside.
. Wait a minute or so, the water should turn a translucent red. Stir it up if it’s a bit cloudy. What can this red water be used for? Anything colorful around?
. Use the water to look at the tile with the colorful geometric design. What do you see?
. You should see six shapes that show up darker. Do you see these shapes anywhere else?
. The outlined shapes match the ones seen on the wooden pieces. Each wooden piece can be identified by the shape inside the circle.
. Assemble the wooden pieces into a circle according to the order shown on the geometric pattern.
. To confirm the assembly of your pieces, find the following letters and make sure the pieces are in this order going clockwise: H, A, D, S, O, B. (If you are playing with the wooden board of the collector’s edition, the pieces should be in the following order: H, B, A, S, L, G.) What objects can you use together to translate the symbols into letters?
. The circled shapes are the same size as the little pointy figurine.
. Place the figurine on one of the circled shapes. Then place the candle on one of the symbols inside a matching shape. Do you notice anything?
. The candle causes the figurine to cast a shadow and point to a letter.
. Each circled shape has 4 or 5 corresponding symbols. When the figurine is on a specific encircled shape, moving the candle onto symbols with the same shape will give you the translation for every letter.
. Use the letters to translate the message from the tile with the symbols. Notice the zig zaggy shape to the left of the moon for guidance on how to read the message.
Epilogue
. The only thing to solve in this letter is a hidden message. “Follow what follows” is your clue.
. Did you notice the little red lines underneath some of the letters?
. Consider what “follows” those lines.
. Take the letters that immediately follow a letter with a red lines. For example, the first two letters in the message are M and E.
