April 26

We have arrived at the house of the woman Tove, but it is empty of her clothes and books. The girl who answered the door said that she had gone further north, to the land where she grew up; she did not know the way or the people. (My grandmother says this is the way of the old: they want to return to the lands of their youth.)

Marketa tried to cast bones and divine Tove’s location, but she found that we were not close enough. Now she is pacing in Tove’s study, while I sit and eat of the bread that the girl brought us. I must document that the bread is made of rye and is quite delicious.

Other documentation: We are in a small room that smells of herbs. There are animal skeletons arranged on shelves, of various types and sizes. Marketa is looking at them closely. She says that Tove would not have left them behind if there were not something important about one of them. However I think there are many good reasons not to bring animal skeletons on your travels. Now Marketa is picking up the skeletons, rearranging them. Rearranging things is one of her methods. I will study her before documenting further.
